"And God appeared to him in the plains of Mamre, while he sat in the opening of his tent as the day was heating up."
Genesis 18:1
This is a representation of the bedazzlement that Abraham saw at the opening of his tent when the three angels appeared to him. They announced that Sarah would miraculously bear a child in her old age. There is a midrash that this moment came as Abraham was recuperating from his circumcision. The colors describe the heat of the day, and a pain of hallucinatory intensity that is transformative. The pattern of the stars was inspired by the blossom end of a pomegranate.
